The UK has an amazing range of Museums that cover everything from Art to History, Military & much more!
But, did you know that some of these can be enjoyed from the comfort of your own home?
Yes, you can sit at your computer with Coffee & maybe even a Cake & absorb yourself in hours of interesting & informative content all for free!
Many Museums also have a virtual collection which means that you can access collections of images, recordings, historic files, documents & other kinds of electronic media via your computer, pad or phone. These can be a powerful tool if researching a particular subject or locality.
We have complied a range of British Museums that we think you might enjoy & give some detail on what you may expect to find.
Art UK
Art UK is the online home for art collections in the UK & is a cultural education charity. I have used this website in the past when taking courses in WW1 Military History as it provides a lot of paintings from the time that give the viewer a good idea of what the conditions those who fought may have experienced.
There is a wealth of topics covered including Transport & Industry, Arts & Entertainment, Towns & Buildings, Home & Family, War & Conflict, Fashion & Costume & Work & Business to name a few.
A lot of these images provide detail that gives us all an idea of what life may have been like in days gone by for our Ancestors.
Big Pit Exhibitions Tour
The National Museum of Wales offers a free virtual reality tour (viewable via Google Expeditions). You can download the tour which lets the viewer explore a Welsh Coal Mine…without the dangers that some of our Ancestors may have experienced whilst working there!
The British Museum, Online Collection
The British Museum in London is committed to Human History, Art & Culture.
They offer a whole host of information online including blog articles, podcasts, a YouTube channel & an amazing searchable online collection. Take a look & search for topics that may interest you.

Historic Royal Palaces
A fascinating website which brings 6 palaces & their stories to life. These include the history of various locations including the Tower of London, Hampton Court Palace, Kensington Palace & much more.
So, if you have an interest in the British Royals or some of the Royal Buildings it is the place to find out more. There are lots of interesting videos, articles, podcasts & even activities for the kids.

Virtual Visit Tours – Ireland
Do you have in interest in Ireland or perhaps you have Ancestors who lived there? Virtual Visits Ireland isn’t quite a museum but more of a current 360° virtual tour viewer that gives the viewer the opportunity to view places in Ireland without leaving their armchair.

The National Museum of Scotland
The largest Museum in Scotland it tells the story of Scotland from the earliest time up to the present day.
It is a place I have visited many times & to be honest you would need to set aside days to explore it fully.

If you want to go a bit further than the UK then check out Google Art & Culture pages.
Google provides links to a wealth of collections & exhibitions from masses of Worldwide museums but all in the one place.
You can breakdown the collections into categories such as Artists, Historic Events & Places or explore by time period & location.
It is worth checking the ‘Collections’ section, this lists out all the Museums available & what exhibitions they have available online. A quick search reveals Museums such as the Museum of Death in Mexico, 10 Downing Street in London (Home of the British Prime Minister), The Palace of Versailles & Anne Frank House.
