Are you researching family who once lived in New Monkland Parish, Airdrie? They may be buried in New Monkland Churchyard or commemorated on a local memorial.

As part of my ongoing One-Place Study, I photographed and indexed every readable gravestone in New Monkland Churchyard — a project that began many years ago. I'm glad I started early, as noticeable erosion has since affected many of the older stones.

About the Churchyard

New Monkland Churchyard contains lairs dating back to 1685, according to the official lair map. The earliest visible inscription dates to 1723, with burials continuing through to the 1970s.

-
The area around the church was used until 1845.
-
The side section and area beyond the churchyard wall were opened mid-1845.
-
The new cemetery officially opened in 1879, though burials still took place within the churchyard thereafter.
-

I was fortunate to access an Official Lair Map (Burgh of Airdrie Revised Tracing, Nov 1970), which proved invaluable in identifying names worn away on stones or where stones were entirely missing.
