New Monkland One-Place Study (Airdrie)
My interest in New Monkland and Airdrie began during my university studies, where I regularly consulted local resources. That passion grew into action — I later photographed and indexed every gravestone in New Monkland Churchyard, creating a valuable resource for family historians and local researchers.
Preserving the Past for the Future
The long-term goal of this project is to transfer the archive to a local studies office or archive for wider public benefit.
As a local resident, I often carry out research in and around Airdrie for clients. In 2020, during the height of the Coronavirus pandemic, I launched the New Monkland (Airdrie) – Back in Time Facebook group, where I regularly share insights into local places, people, and stories.
The group has become a friendly and welcoming community, where members share their own memories, family stories, photographs, and local knowledge. It’s also a great place to ask questions and connect with others who share an interest in Airdrie’s history and heritage.
As the group and my research expanded, I realised that the information — along with many of the smaller “side projects” I pursue out of curiosity — should be gathered and preserved more formally. That’s when I registered New Monkland Parish as a One-Place Study.
