Agriculture & Fishing

The Kilted Ancestors Prompt for August was Agriculture & Fishing

Although I have some Ship Master relatives from Banff at this stage in my research I need to ascertain if they were fishermen or worked in merchant shipping. Therefore, for this topic, I will be covering the story of one of my agricultural families.

George Reid married Catherine Mather on 1st December 1871 at Tibbermore in Perthshire. At this time, he was working as a Railway Porter, but would later go on to work in Agriculture initially as a ploughman before moving to St Madoes where he would run his own farm.

The couple had 2 children, Catherine born 1873 & Donald or Daniel born 1875.

The family lived at Pitcoag Farm in St Madoes which sat close to the nearby farm of Gallowflat which was owned by the Gilmour Family. Their children would both go on to marry Gilmour’s of Gallowflat, not the first time in my research where I have found two siblings from one family marry two siblings from another family, I suppose it was much easier to socialise in the same circles & made finding a match much easier in those days.

Catherine Reid would marry Alexander Gowrie Gilmour in 1898 & the couple would take over Gallowflat form where they would raise their children.

Daniel would marry Agnes Gowrie Gilmour in 1901 & the couple would run the Errol Arms Hotel in the nearby town of Errol.

During one of my many Family History trips I followed the Reid families trail from their roots in Tibbermore to St Madoes & Errol. It was lovely to see the farms & hotel that they lived in & to absorb the beauty of the area, I always find that these trips help me connect with families on a greater level.

For a man who worked as a Ploughman in the early 1870s George certainly did well for himself as did his Children. Having attending the funeral of Sir James Stewart Richardson in 1895, he is later listed as being one of the influential guests at a garden party in 1904 at Pitfour Castle to celebrate the marriage of Sir Edward & Lady Stewart Richardson. Their children & their spouses along with many other members of the Gilmour family were also in attendance.

All of the family are buried in St Madoes Churchyard where they lie close to one another.
