2 Amazing Reference Websites that will assist your Family History Search

As we progress through our Family Tree, we can often be confronted with research challenges & not knowing where to look or what records might be available can be a major issue for us all.

You may need:-

· Information on a Locality & what records are available there

· Details of where to find Military records & what they might include

· Information on local Museums or Societies

· More information on Names, Occupations or Illnesses

· Help with old Handwriting

· A background of dwellings or details relating to the history of a building

· Details on Free Websites that could help assist you in your research

This list is endless!

But thankfully there are a couple of Reference websites that can help point you in the right direction. GENUKI

The first one we will look at is GENUKI.

It is a volunteer run, non-commercial Genealogical virtual reference library which focuses on British & Irish resources.

Users can search by country, county or parish which then provides a list of topics relating to the area such as Archives, Cemeteries, Church Records, Maps etc. On selecting a topic, the user finds detail on what information is available relating each topic & where it can be found.

The main webpage also has a section of ‘quick links’ which help the user find information easily on topics such as Societies, Gazetteers & Genealogical events & even guides on how to get started in Genealogy.

Is a pretty good website especially if your research has moved to an area you are unfamiliar with.

It has recently undergone some reorganisation & on checking my own local area I notice that information that had previously been wrong has now been corrected.

Like any website it relies on correct up to date information being put in so bear in mind that it is also worthwhile carrying out a quick search online yourself just in case a particular resource has been missed.

Cyndi's List

Like Genuki, Cyndi's List breaks down the resources by category & place & is said to include over 332,000 links & over 200 Categories.

But, the bonus with Cyndi’s list is that is includes links relating to research worldwide!

So, if your research ventures into the Netherlands, Korea or Greece you can easily find links to potential resources at your fingertips.

This website also provides the user with links to websites relating to adoption, novelties & gifts, bridges, passports, reunions, mailing lists & so much more!

Again, it is always worthwhile carrying out a search yourself just in case the information has not yet been submitted.

If you have worked on a Local History project it is also really easy to submit your website to be included in this list.

It’s a pretty amazing site & one that could see you lost for many hours even swaying from the subject you originally went in to search for….so who knows what you might find!
